As Fluidic Analytics’ Optical Research Scientist, you’ll design and develop innovative microfluidic single molecule detection systems for ground-breaking life-science and medical-diagnostic instruments. You will design and build optical systems for single molecule detection, and design and execute experiments to demonstrate and validate optical detection technologies. You’ll also perform signal processing and implement statistical methods for single molecule data processing. At all times you will look to develop innovative solutions to improve the Company’s products. You can expect to work closely with the existing optics team and receive excellent support from our engineers and scientists.
Working from our Cambridge headquarters and reporting to the Head of R&D, you’ll push our detection capabilities to single molecule level, building and testing cutting edge optical systems for incorporation into our world-leading protein analysis instruments

Design and build optical systems for single molecule detection
- Confocal and surface-based techniques
- Carry out simulations of illumination and detection configurations using suitable software
- Develop prototypes using off-the-shelf and custom parts as required, on time and meeting budgetary restraints
- Monitor developments in technology and assess for viability
- Maintain an overview of how prototype systems could be translated into viable commercial products
Design and execute experiments to demonstrate and validate technologies
- Generate proof-of-principle data based on which further development can be executed
- Record and report results to the team
- Efficiently evaluate options and focus effort accordingly
- Rapidly iterate designs based on experimental evidence
Perform signal processing and implement statistical methods for single molecule data processing
- Translate raw data into meaningful results for the Company’s customers
- Implement efficient algorithms for data processing and interact closely with our in-house software team to integrate into the Company’s code.
Develop innovative solutions to improve the Company’s products
- Proactively search for and identify new technologies and strategies to help the Company realise its long-term product development goals.
- Play an active role in blue-skies activities to open new avenues for future product development.
- Continuously identify means to improve the reliability and sensitivity of the Company’s product pipeline.
- Lead IP capture for patents involving single molecule detection and contribute to freedom-to-operate assessments
Requirements of the candidate
- PhD in physics, biophysics, photonics or nano-optics/photonics essential; postdoctoral experience preferred
- Extensive experience with microscopy and single molecule detection essential
- Strong hands-on experimental skills
- Goal oriented
- Enthusiasm for product development
- Awareness of the roles of timing, documentation and commercial consideration
