The Systems Administrator student placement is a one-year programme designed for undergraduate students and would be ideal as a year in industry as part of your degree course.
As part of this placement, you will get an opportunity to work hands-on in a start-up environment and be supported in developing key technical skills that will enable you to grow in your future career.
What will the placement involve?
- Responding to internal support tickets made by colleagues
- Supporting desktop operating systems (mostly Linux, Mac OS, some Windows)
- Building new PCs
- Installing software
- Password resets
- Troubleshooting IT and printing issues
- Automation (ansible, scripting etc)
- Tool/hardware evaluation
- Network Administration (Cisco)
What skills, experience and qualifications do you need to succeed in this placement?
- Academic studies that include coding
- Demonstrable enthusiasm for IT disciplines including Linux, for example:
- Home server
- Using Linux where Windows would have been simpler
- Coder in a GitHub repository
- Building your own PC or Drone
- Home automation project
- Robotics (Lego Mindstorms etc)
- IPv6 networking
- Adhoc technical support (paid or unpaid)
- Stack Exchange profile
To be successful in this role you should be able to explain technical solutions to non-technical (or different technical) audiences and enjoy helping others with their IT problems. You will be a team player who works collaboratively and you'll have an inquisitive mindset. Problem solving will be something that motivates you and you'll enjoy communicating with a diverse network of people.
